*Asking for, Giving and Refusing Things*
Do you always have all things you need? You often need to ask for things to others, don’t you? You sometimes also give things to others. Can you ask for and give things to others appropriately, even you can refuse to things.

A. Expression of asking something
1.     Can I have your phone number?
2.     Could you take me the umbrella?
3.     Would you pass me the paper?
4.     May I have a cup of tea?
5.     Could you grab me the pen?
6.     Do you mind giving me your address?
7.     Take some pails of water, please?
8.     Can you lend me your bike, please?
9.     Will you give me your identification card?
10. Would you share your tissue, please?

B. Expression of giving something
1.     OK, No problem.
2.     With my pleasure.
3.     Sure!
4.     Help yourself.
5.     Serve yourself.
6.     Please have one.
7.     Here you are.
8.     Certainly!
9.     Never mind.
10. Of course, you may.

C. Expression of refusing something
1.     No, thanks.
2.     Not now, please.
3.     Sorry I can receive it.
4.     I'd love too, but I'm full now.
5.     I don't feel like having it now, thanks anyway.
6.     May be later.
7.     Actually I want too, but I don't want to bother you.
8.     It sound great, but I don't need it now.
9.     Thanks, but I think I don't deserve to get it.

      Kresna             : Hi Dona, what are you doing?
      Dona                : Kresna, would you please take this bag?
      Kresna             : With pleasure Dona.
Example of giving help
      Kresna             : Dona, why are you so sad?
      Dona                : I can go on holiday this summer, because My Mom asked me to stay at home.
      Kresna             : Please don’t be sad Dona. May I help you?
      Dona                : Thank you, you are my best friend Kresna, I love you.
Example of refusing help
      Kresna             : Dona, There is something in your hair. Let me help you to pick it up.
      Dona    : No, thank you. I can do it myself.


Dialog B


PAUL    : Hello John.
John                 : Hello Paul.
John                 : Paul, you look so bad, what’s happen ?
Paul                 : my pocket was lost in the school field.
                          Would you like to help me to find it ?
John                 : yes of course.

Paul                 : if we can’t find it
                          ………….. lending me a money?
John                 : ………..(rejecting a request)
Paul                 : okay, nevermind.
                          

Exercise 1
Giving your response to the following situation.
1.    Kresna: Excuse me. Would you please lend me some money?
You: (You say you will be glad to help)
2.    Kresna: Can I help you taking that books upstairs?
You :(You refuse Kresna's help politely)
3.    Dona: Excuse me Mr. Can you show me the way to the bogor botanical garden?
You:(You say you will help her until she reaches in zoology.
4.  Dona: Let me help you to cook the vegetables
You: You accept Kresna's help with pleasure.


Exercise 2
Think of 5 things that you need from your classmate then ask them if they can help you. Write down their responses n the table below!
